Hispanic Heritage Month

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, CASA is calling for more Hispanic and bilingual volunteers to help speak up for Hispanic children in the foster care system. From September 15 to October 15, we join San Antonio to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month!  People from all over the United States observe the history, culture and contributions of the Hispanic community. For Hispanic children in the system however, celebrating their culture can be a challenge.

The involvement of our Hispanic volunteers helps to provide some of the greatest contributions and positive impacts for the children we serve here in Bexar County. These great individuals who chose to stand up for abused and neglected children help provide an extra set of eyes to ensure they do not get shuffled in an overburdened foster care system. According to the Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS), Bexar County alone has 1,800 Hispanic children out of 2,606 total foster children going through serious traumatic experiences and often times lack a familiar face who can understand their struggles and relate culturally.

As a community, our responsibility is to help in reducing the child abuse epidemic that plagues our city and affects some of the most vulnerable children. Children with a CASA volunteer that can identify with their culture and background are more likely to build trust and express their voice for services they desperately need. Consider volunteering with us today so you can be the difference maker in your community.

The child abuse epidemic that plagues our city and county can be remedied with community volunteers to find community solutions and increasing our Hispanic volunteers is crucial for those successes.

Our next upcoming evening training starts on October 9th and it’s the perfect time for you to become a CASA volunteer. To receive more information, please email Forrest Miller, the Diversity Recruitment Specialist, at fmiller@casa-satx.org and he will be more than happy to send you more information!
