November is National Adoption Month!

Did you know that November is National Adoption Month? National Adoption Month is a Children's Welfare initiative that brings attention to children and youth waiting for permanent families. This year’s theme focuses on the older youth currently in foster care and calls attention to our nation's population of older youth in foster care who need loving, permanent families. Older youth ages 15 to 18 make up 5 percent of the foster care population and creating lifelong connections for these young people is critical in helping them prepare for successful adulthood (Children’s Bureau, 2015).

Compared to their peers, many youth in foster care face higher rates of poor outcomes, such as dropping out of high school, unemployment, and homelessness. Despite these challenges, research on positive youth development confirms that children and youth have the ability to overcome traumatic experiences and thrive in adulthood when they are connected to a strong, permanent support system. All youth need a sense of belonging; through adoption, youth are connected to a family who not only provide a sense of stability, but also help them navigate the complicated landscape of their emerging independence.

Here at CASA we play a critical role in helping decide what is in the best interest of the child, especially the older youth of San Antonio and Bexar County. Our Advocates are able to help these children find a safe and permanent home 8 months faster and they are half as likely to re-enter the foster system. Unfortunately there are times where children are placed in permanent foster care, and CASA is able to successfully serve them through our Permanent Managing Conservatorship (PMC) program. Because of our CASA PMC program, we can help direct our Advocates and those involved with the case to help find services to ensure these young people form lasting connections that can help with important life tasks such as enrolling in higher education, finding stable housing, securing employment, and establishing healthy relationships.
