Play a Meaningful Role in Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, and CASA recognizes this as a time to bring greater awareness to the child abuse and neglect that takes place in San Antonio and Bexar County.

Unfortunately, child abuse exists in San Antonio at an alarming rate. Last year in Bexar County alone, there were 4,941 confirmed victims of child abuse. Now is the time to focus our efforts on ways to protect children from abusive situations and help find ways to prevent abuse from occurring. As a community, we must break the cycle and arm ourselves with the facts to battle the signs of child abuse and care for our most vulnerable.

There are currently 5,002 children in State protective care because of abuse and neglect. CASA advocates for the best interest of these children and fights for the best services possible – we make sure these children don’t fall through the cracks of an overwhelmed child welfare system.

Check out these vital impacts a CASA Advocate makes:

  • Children find a safe and permanent home 8 months faster with a CASA
  • Children with a CASA are half as likely to re-enter the foster system
  • Children with CASA volunteers are more likely to receive education, medical, and other needed services
  • With a CASA they experience fewer, traumatic placement moves during their stay in foster care

This month, encourage everyone to help make San Antonio a better place for children and families. By ensuring you have the knowledge, skills, and resources to care for the children in our community, we can make San Antonio and Bexar County a better place for our future. You can make a difference by volunteering to be a CASA for just a few hours a month – make sure to sign up for one of our info sessions!  If you aren’t able to be a volunteer, consider donating to CASA so we can continue recruiting more volunteers who can advocate for abused/neglected children.

Below are some ways you can stand up for children during Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month:

The Cardboard Kids are a fun and creative way to show your support for Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention month to create awareness about child abuse and neglect and our mission of ending child abuse in Bexar County. ChildSAFE has already distributed all of their kids – if you were one of the lucky ones to get one before they ran out, you are encouraged to display your own Cardboard Kids to be showcased on “Reveal Day” this April 7th around San Antonio. We can’t wait to see yours around town!

CASA Balloon Release Day
Join CASA for a Balloon Release at the CASA offices to honor victims of crime with our CASA staff, Bexar County Judges, and City officials.  Judge Peter Sakai, Police Chief William McManus, Senator Carlos Uresti, Sheriff Susan Pamerleau, and Erica Baneulos (CPS Regional Director) will all be in attendance.

The event begins at 10 am with a news conference and will culminate with the release of over 200 balloons! If you would like to participate, we ask that you bring no more than 10 latex balloons with a color that symbolizes your cause (blue for child abuse awareness, purple for domestic violence, and green for mental health awareness, etc.).

April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month – today is GO BLUE Day to let people know that there were close to 4,000 confirmed victims in Bexar County in the last year.
