"I started my work with children over 10 years ago as a CASA case worker in Chicago. This is by far the most important volunteer work you can do for abused and neglected children. My dream would be for every child in the system to have a CASA volunteer. As a CASA, you represent the best interests of your assigned child, or children, in court. You are thier VOICE. More often than not, family court judges will weigh your opinion heavier than any other perosn in the court room." In 2007, 1, 766 children were removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect in Bexar County. CASA volunteers ensure that kids in foster care don't fall through the cracks of our overburdend child welfare system. For our fiscal year ending June 2008, 289 community volunteers served 1, 398 children.
