The mission of Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) is to recruit, train, and supervise court-appointed volunteer Advocates who provide constancy for abused and neglected children and youth while advocating for services and placement in safe and permanent homes.
Our goal for fiscal year 2017 (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017) is to serve 2,500 children by mobilizing a record-breaking 800 community volunteers. The efforts of CASA’s volunteer Advocates help ensure Bexar County’s foster children are receiving the necessary medical, developmental and educational attention they need. Our goal for this fiscal year mirrors our past success, with a minimum of 95% of children served being impacted specifically because of the work and dedication of their volunteer. We anticipate achieving this outcome by aiming to provide a single volunteer Advocate throughout the duration of the case for at least 90% of the children served. The continued presence of one Advocate provides constancy in a child’s life that would otherwise not be present.
As it becomes increasingly difficult for the courts and social workers to make the system work for families and children, judges continue to appoint CASA to as many cases as possible. Now more than ever, they are relying on our Advocates’ independent and impartial recommendations to speak to the needs and best interests of the child. CASA volunteers are essential because they provide valuable information and insight about each individual child, helping to ensure that they do not “fall through the cracks” or simply become another statistic in the often times generational cycle of abuse. Our goal for fiscal year 2017 is to ensure that judges agree with the recommendations of our Advocates regarding the best interests and placement of the children served at least 95% of the time.
Children come into State care not by their own fault but because of the acts and/or negligence of their parents and caregivers. Through our community volunteers, we provide critical advocacy and services to these vulnerable, at-risk youth, ensuring that their needs and best interests are addressed. No other agency provides this unique, critical service in Bexar County. Judge Peter Sakai of the 225th District Court emphasized the importance of CASA’s role in saying, “The best way to prevent child abuse is to stop the cycle. Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) gives these young victims what no agency can…..someone to speak up for them and someone to trust.”
