Advocate Spotlight: Roger “Lance” and Jennie Mayes
Meet Lance and Jennie Mays

1. How long have you been an Advocate and when did you realize you wanted to become one?
We were sworn in as advocates in November 2023 and after a brief case that didn't last long, we were assigned our first case in January 2024. I had a friend 20 years ago that was an advocate, and I knew it was something that I wanted to do, but that it would have to be after our kids were grown up and I'm so glad we waited. Our daughter graduated high school in May 2023, and we started our CASA training in September 2023. We knew there was a need for supporting children in the foster care system. The training showed us how big the need is, and the incredible difference advocates make.
2. What is the most rewarding aspect of being an Advocate? Seeing children get access to care and resources they need to help them in their development and growth. We are still in our first case 2 ½ years later and we have literally seen these children grow up! Children need their voices to be heard, and advocates get a chance to hand them the microphone.
3. If you could offer some words of encouragement to your fellow and incoming Advocates, what would they be? Don't give up on the hard days. Pause, take a break (and a breath!), and keep advocating. You are making a difference! Celebrate the progress you see. Children need caring adults -- the more, the better. Yes, being an advocate is very difficult at times, and it is worth every minute investing in the lives of children.
