Advocacy Tip: What is Attachment?

Attachment can be defined as the primary emotional relationship with a caregiver that serves as the basis for all later relationships. Children are biologically wired to form attachments with their primary caregiver. For example, a baby or young child’s cuddling, orienting, and crying instincts are meant to elicit caregiving responses, and infants prefer their caregiver’s face and voice over other stimuli.
