CASA’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

CASA's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

Each year, CASA is proud to thank our volunteer Advocates by hosting an event solely for the purpose of showing appreciation for the time and effort that they contribute to serve thousands of Bexar County's most deserving children. The 2013 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held on Wednesday, April 10, at the Bright Shawl. Attendees enjoyed lunch as CASA’s Rookie Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year awards were announced, and our tenured Advocates of 5+ years of service were also recognized. Volunteers are the backbone of the CASA agency, and we are truly grateful for all of our Advocates, present and past. Thank you to all who were able to join us.

Balloon release in honor of National Crime Victims Awareness WeekEvents in April for Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month

April was Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month in Texas and across the nation as well. It is a time to focus on ways to not only protect children from abusive environments, but most importantly, to prevent abuse from ever occurring. Unfortunately, child abuse and neglect exists in our state at an alarming rate, and it will not go away by simply ignoring it. It's up to each of us to arm ourselves with the facts, to learn the warning signs, and to watch out for our most innocent Texans. Each of us can prevent the children around us from becoming another heartbreaking statistic. CASA participated in several events focused on child abuse awareness and prevention throughout the month, including a balloon release ceremony in honor of all victims affected by crime (April 8), a victim’s tribute wreath laying ceremony (April 10), the Bexar County Commissioner’s Proclamation in recognition of the month (April 16), and the Million March Against Child Abuse (April 22).

Abby’s Closet

Abby’s Closet is a community-led CASA initiative that benefits our teen girls. In partnership with National Charity League (NCL), we organized and executed the second annual event on April 27, 2013. Each of the participating CASA teen girls enjoyed a day of fashion and glamour in which they selected their very own formal/semi-formal dress and matching accessories.

This event would not have been possible without the support of NCL and other friends and community partners who donated items. If you or anyone you know is interested in donating dresses or accessories for the next Abby’s Closet, please contact Tara Barisic at or 210.225.7070. *Please Note:  Only new or dry-cleaned dresses can be accepted.
