August 18, 1929 - December 4, 2012

Marion Carmichael Persons Whiting, 83, died December 4, 2012, with her family by her side in San Antonio, Texas. She was born August 18, 1929, in Griffin, Georgia to Col. Joseph P. and Marion C. Persons, Jr. Marion's youth was spent with her Army family living in various southeastern cities; Alexandria, Virginia; and Vienna, Austria. On December 27, 1950 she married Robert Edward Whiting (also a CASA Volunteer).

She attended Cornerstone Church, served as a Red Cross volunteer, and for the last 22 years had been an active court appointed Advocate with CASA (Child Advocates San Antonio) – earning many service awards, including 1994 CASA Advocate of the Year.

For the past twenty-five years she was an active sponsor with Save the Children. She also participated in Rotary International's Youth Exchange Program with her husband as a host family. Her friends described her as a kind and gentle lady, devoted to her family. Mrs. Whiting is survived by her husband, Bob; 2 sons, Robert Jr., and Tom and his spouse Suzanne; a daughter Julia; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Marion was a dedicated and longtime CASA Volunteer.  She worked many cases and served dozens of children, ensuring that the children were in a safe and permanent home. She was the kind of person who put others first.  She always had a kind word for others.  Her dedication and compassion for helping children, the most vulnerable population in our community, was extraordinary.  Many thanks to Marion for the unforgettable impacts she made on the lives of children in our community.
