CASA’s 8th Annual Breakfast of Champions

CASA held its 8th Annual Breakfast of Champions at the San Antonio Country Club on April 26th, 2016.

This invitation only breakfast allows CASA to spread awareness to our community and pledge their financial support for over multiple years to help us provide Advocates for the victims of child abuse and neglect. With over 5,000 children in the foster system, this event gives us an opportunity to provide a voice for those who do not have the ability to speak up for themselves in a convoluted process. Without an Advocate, these abused children are more likely to fall through the cracks of an overburdened system - the Breakfast of Champions helps us reach our most vulnerable population, victims of abuse and neglect, with a CASA Advocate.

Our attendees listened to a heartfelt testimonial from Mel Anderson, a former foster youth and now successful attorney, wife, and mother of 8. Mel guided us through her horrors and journey of an abused seven year old girl struggling for survival in a broken system, to show the need for every abused and neglected child in the foster system to have an Advocate fighting for them.  Along with her harrowing story about her experiences of childhood abuse and neglect to her journey to success, Judge Richard Garcia, foster parent Jared Anderson, CPS Caseworker Sara Reilly, and therapist Carlos Castillo-Nunez each shared a personal testimonial of the impacts our Advocates make for our community and the hope they give these children in the foster system. Each of these community members testified to the positive impacts our Advocates make and helped our Breakfast of Champions an even greater success.

The 8th Annual Breakfast of Champions brought us closer to providing an Advocate for every child who needs one in our community. We could not successfully accomplish our mission without the community supporters, Advocates, and all those that attending this year’s Breakfast. CASA would like to specially thank the Valero Energy Foundation for signing up to be this year’s Title Sponsor – their support is crucial to our successes and we cannot thank them enough for their generosity!

Thank you so much for those who pledged their support for CASA and all of those who attended! This year was one of our most successful Breakfast of Champions yet.
