Child Advocates San Antonio Celebrates Diez y Seis de Septiembre 09/19/2016

This year Child Advocates San Antonio took part in the 35th annual Avenida Guadalupe Deiz y Seis de Septiembre Parade. The history of Diez y Seis de Septiembre dates back to 1810, and is the most patriotic of Mexico's holidays which is highly celebrated amongst the Hispanic community.  Diez y Seis de Septiembre is Mexico’s “4th of July” and is celebrated with fiestas (parties), food, music, decorations and multiple festivities. It is not uncommon to hear shouts of “Viva Mexico” or “Vivia La Independencia” during these celebrations.  San Antonio has such a diverse community and this brings an opportunity for people of Hispanic descent to celebrate their culture and the many things that make their culture unique.

CASA volunteers, CASA staff, and their friends and family represented our organization and celebrated the rich Hispanic tradition. We marched right through the heart of the historic Westside and ended at the Plaza Guadalupe where we were greeted with live music and festivities. We helped raise awareness on the need to provide a voice for children who have been abused or neglected. Oftentimes, people are unaware of the different challenges Hispanic children face while in foster care – challenges like being placed with a family that does not speak their native language or celebrate their customs.  CASA was delighted to meet some of the wonderful community members and talk about the need for more Hispanic and bilingual volunteers to speak up for Hispanic children in foster care.

Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers and staff who selflessly came out to represent not only our organization but also the hundreds of Hispanic children who remain without a voice. We look forward to future opportunities to take part in other community events and speak about the need to give our foster kids a chance to proclaim their independence from the abuse and neglect they have encountered.
