August Advocate Spotlight
Candace Nugent
1. How long have you been an Advocate and when did you realize you wanted to become one?
“I have been an Advocate for one year. I realized I wanted to volunteer about 5 years ago when I saw a CASA banner while driving. I come from a family tree that includes several stories of foster care and adoption; some positive and others not so good. Once the last of my children graduated high school, I immediately registered for training and was assigned to a case right after.”
2. What is the most rewarding aspect of being an advocate?
“Visiting with the children is extremely rewarding, but it really is all of the behind-the-scenes work that matters most! Seeing the results when concerns or suggestions are brought forth and knowing that the children's safety, health, and well-being are improving - that is the most important reward to me!”
3. If you could offer some words of encouragement to your fellow and incoming Advocates, what would they be?
“Take time to observe everyone and everything. Ask many questions and listen a lot. Don't get discouraged by any barriers or red tape - there are various ways to get through them eventually. Ask your supervisor for help when you feel stuck. And most importantly, document everything in the system as it happens to ensure you are prepared when it's time to write your court report. Start writing it early so you don't forget any important facts.”
