December Advocate Spotlight
Alice Babine
1. How long have you been an Advocate and when did you realize you wanted to become one?
“When I retired from government service in 2022, I wanted to find a meaningful volunteer opportunity but did not have a specific direction in mind. In 2023 when my church hosted a presentation by the South Texas Alliance for Orphans on how to get involved supporting foster families, the presenter specifically recommended that I consider serving as an Advocate. It seemed a great fit, so I completed the training and began my first case later that year.”
2. What is the most rewarding aspect of being an advocate?
“Seeing the change in children's lives, knowing that you have contributed to a brighter future for them.”
3. If you could offer some words of encouragement to your fellow and incoming Advocates, what would they be?
“Don't give up; speak up and be persistent in seeking solutions to the challenges that children and their families face. Remember that our family court judges place a high value on an Advocate's independent perspective and recommendations. Most of all, be present with your CASA kids. You just might be the one person who believes in them enough that they can begin to believe in themselves.”
